Hermès Eau de Basilique Pourpre

Eau de Basilique Pourpre is the Hermès garden in summer — basil in the foreground, green and slightly anise, lifted by bergamot into something that smells genuinely of a kitchen herb garden rather than a fragrance approximation of one. It is surprisingly literal, and that literalism is precisely what makes it extraordinary. Purple basil, specifically: darker and spicier than the familiar green.

Violet and geranium move the heart away from the purely herbal into something more refined. Clary sage adds an almost smoky quality. White musk and cedar ground the dry-down lightly — this is not a base-heavy fragrance. It wears close, dissipates gracefully, and leaves the impression of someone with an unusually good memory for what a garden smells like.
